CHINGOLA small-scale illegal miners commonly known as jerabos yesterday rioted after being told to vacate the Senseli Open Pit mine where they had been operating from. During the widespread riot, the jerabos were seen breaking into shops and looting. Efforts to disperse the riotous crowd resulted in the arrest of 79 suspects, the tragic shooting of one civilian and injuries to seven police officers. Several properties were also damaged during the riot. Earlier, Copperbelt Minister Elisha Matambo had issued a stern warning, stating that all individuals involved in the looting of people’s shops and other property would be arrested and prosecuted.
