IN a commendable move to safeguard the nation’s natural heritage, the UPND government, through the Zambia Environmental Management Authority (ZEMA), has ordered Mwembeshi Resources Limited to suspend all mining and construction activities in the Lower Zambezi National Park. This is a brave step in the right direction. National parks are designated as protected areas for a reason. They serve as critical habitats for a diverse range of flora and fauna, playing an invaluable role in maintaining biodiversity. Allowing mining activities within these areas jeopardises delicate ecosystems and disrupts the natural balance, leading to irreversible damage.
