Seven St Jones Catholic Choir members have died while 30 others have sustained serious injuries when the canter they were travelling in overturned along Kayambi-Nseluka Road in Kasama.

According to a statement issued by Police Spokesperson Esther Mwaata Katongo today, six died on the spot whilst the seventh died at Kasama General Hospital.

“A report of fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 3rd September, 2017 around 15:00hrs along Kayambi -Nseluka road. Involved was a motor vehicle Mitsubishi canter driven by Bwalya Andrew aged 30 yrs of Chikumanino compound Kasama with 40 passengers on board who are members of St Jones Catholic choir who were coming from Chief Chimba in Kasama. The accident happened after the driver failed to negotiate a curve and over turned killing six (06) people on the spot and one died at Kasama Hospital,” Katongo stated.

She said the driver had been arrested and charged with seven counts of causing death by dangerous driving.
“The deceased have been identified as 1. Gertrude Chilombo, 2. Anna Sampa 3. Judith Chisanga 4. Mukuka Theresa 5. Patricia Chishimba. 6. Judith Nsofwa. 7. Dorine Kangwa, while 30 were seriously injured and admitted to Kasama General Hospital. 19 were females and 11 males. 03 were treated and discharged. Driver charged and arrested for seven counts of causing death by dangerous driving,” stated Katongo.
