MINES and Minerals Development Minister Paul Kabuswe has directed the Minerals Regulation Commission (MRC) to go round all decommissioned tailings and check their integrity. The TD33C Tailings Dam in Kitwe partially collapsed due to heavy rains and discharged materials into the nearby Chibuluma stream which feeds into the Kafue River. The partially collapsed Tailings dam belongs to ACL Company and has affected aquatic life, vegetables, some maize fields and the environment within the area after releasing over 3.5 tonnes of spillage and heavy metals into the stream. Kabuswe has also directed the Commission to check if mining companies are adhering to government’s instruction of redesigning all the tailings daam to avoid the Sino Metals situation.
