Vice-President Inonge Wina has advised farmers to engage in value addition practices like food processing in order to achieve food security.

According to a statement issued by Permanent Secretary, Administration in the Office of the Vice President Stephen Mwansa, Thursday, Vice President Wina has since invited farmers to attend a “women farmers and food processors exhibition” in Chilanga this Saturday.

“Her honour the Vice President is happy that the rainy season has began in most parts of the country; and has therefore called on farmers to adequately prepare by seeking professional advice from experts on the types and varieties of food crops to plant. The Republican Vice President stated that given the lessons arising from the droughts and floods experienced during the 2018/2019 farming season, it is important for farmers to diversify the food crops so that households have sufficient and nutritious foods for consumption at all times. The Republican Vice President has since invited farmers, agro dealers, processors, up takers and communities to attend the women farmers and food processors exhibition hosted by her honour the Vice President in conjunction with the Ministry of Agriculture as well as the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock on Saturday 30th November at Zambia Agriculture Research Institute in Chilanga,” stated Mwansa.

“The purpose of the exhibition is to showcase the crop value chains from research, seed production, planting, management, harvesting, storage and food processing. The Vice President further advised households that upon harvest, there is need for value addition through food processing. This approach is one way of achieving food security while creating jobs and wealth along the value chain by small, medium and large scale enterprises.”
