FORMER Energy Minister Peter Kapala says the country has clawed back a total of 260 megawatts from the 530 megawatts on export market. Recently, information emerged that during the first quarter of 2024, Botswana experienced a significant 49.1 percent increase in electricity imports and that Zesco had emerged as the predominant supplier contributing 48.8 percent to that country’s total electricity imports. In an interview before he was moved to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock, Kapala clarified that Zambia’s power exports to Botswana seemed huge in percentage form but it only accounted for about 60 megawatts. “Exports [have been] reduced from 530MW down to 270MW, clawed 260MW.
