A 38-year-old man of George Compound has been sentenced to one year imprisonment with hard labour for stealing K15,700 from his former employer, ZAMS Milling Company.

In this matter, Victor Chisanga, who was charged with one count of theft by servant, allegedly stole the money, fled to Mansa and lived at a lodge using the money in question.

Particulars of the offence alleged that on November 20, 2018, Lusaka, Chisanga being employed as an off-loader of mealie meal by ZAMS Milling, did steal K15,700, property of the employer.

Facts of the matter were that Chisanga was employed on October 1, 2018, by ZAMS Milling Company.

On November 20, he was dispatched in the field with the driver and others, to deliver mealie meal products and collect cash from wholesalers.

A total of K15,700 cash was collected and put in the truck.

Around midday, the occupants left the truck for lunch, leaving the accused alone in the truck as he claimed to be unwell.

On return, they discovered that the accused was not in the truck, he had disappeared to unknown destination together with the cash.

The matter was reported to Misisi Police Post and investigations were instituted, which led to the apprehension of the accused person.

Under warn and caution statement, the accused said he stole the money, fled to Mansa and lived at a lodge using the same money in question.

He admitted that he had no right to deprive the owner permanently of his property.

Nothing was recovered from the said stolen money.

And taking plea before Magistrate Silvia Munyinya, Monday, Chisanga admitted stealing the said money, saying he didn’t get paid for the month of November.

In mitigation, Chisanga asked for forgiveness, saying he was the one taking care of his family.

Magistrate Munyinya, however, sentenced him to one year imprisonment with hard labour with effect from the date of arrest.
