In the shimmering corridors of diplomacy, 2024 has been nothing short of transformative for the Zambia High Commission to Australia and New Zealand. This has been a year of bold initiatives, historic milestones, and cultural celebrations that have elevated Zambia’s standing on the global stage, strengthening ties across Australia, New Zealand, and the South Pacific.
From representing Zambia at the highest echelons of Commonwealth leadership to showcasing its cultural vibrancy, the Mission has woven a narrative of progress, unity, and opportunity that resonates both at home and abroad.
CHOGM 2024: Zambia’s Voice Resounds in Samoa
Against the backdrop of the tropical landscapes of Apia, Samoa, Zambia made an indelible mark at the 2024 Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM).
Leading Zambia’s delegation was the astute and articulate Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Minister Mulambo Haimbe.
At the heart of this global gathering, Mr Haimbe’s keynote address at the Commonwealth Business Forum was a rallying call for partnership and progress. With conviction and clarity, he highlighted Zambia’s political stability, economic resilience, and welcoming investment climate, capturing the attention of over 20 nations eager to forge ties with Zambia.
But the crowning jewel of Zambia’s CHOGM participation was its election as Vice-Chair of the Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group (CMAG).
This prestigious role not only underscores Zambia’s unwavering commitment to democracy, human rights, and governance but also places it at the forefront of addressing global challenges to these values.
A Parliamentary Milestone in Sydney
Across the Tasman Sea, Zambia achieved another diplomatic breakthrough at the 67th Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) in Sydney, Australia.
In a closely contested race for the Chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Executive Committee, UPND’s Lukulu East Member of Parliament Christopher Kalila, emerged victorious after he defeated two other contestants.
Dr Kailia made history as he became the second Zambian and fifth in Africa to be elected as Chairperson of the CPA Executive Committee.
Dr Kalila’s landmark election places Zambia in a position to influence policies and champion democratic principles over the next three years.
His win is not just a personal triumph but a testament to Zambia’s rising prominence within the Commonwealth, a beacon of hope for equitable and inclusive governance.
Cultural Diplomacy: The Rhythm of Zambia in Canberra
Diplomacy took a vibrant turn as the High Commission embraced cultural celebration with the launch of the Zambian Culture Dancing Group in Canberra. Their electrifying performance during Africa Day reverberated with pride, earning recognition from the African Australian Council ACT Incorporation.
For the diaspora, this was more than a dance—it was a bridge connecting them to their roots. For international audiences, it was a glimpse into Zambia’s rich heritage, a narrative of unity and pride that transcends borders.
Educational Empowerment: Investing in Zambia’s Future
Two Zambian professionals both females are set to embark on transformative journey thanks to the Australia Awards Africa Master’s scholarships for 2025.
Meda Chikonge, from the Ministry of Health, will delve into Disability Practice and Leadership at Flinders University while Kadiata Ndamikwa Dieye, from the Ministry of Agriculture, will pursue Agricultural Economics at the University of Western Australia.
These scholarships, fully funded by the Australian Government, reflect a shared commitment to capacity building and knowledge exchange.
Zambia’s High Commissioner to Australia and New Zealand Dr Elias Munshya hailed this educational partnership as a cornerstone of Zambia’s development strategy, strengthening bonds with Australia in impactful ways.
The Diaspora: Zambia’s Eleventh Province
President Hakainde Hichilema has often referred to the Zambian diaspora as the country’s ‘eleventh province’, a sentiment that underlines their importance to the nation’s growth. In 2024, this bond grew stronger, with initiatives fostering investment opportunities and encouraging diaspora involvement in Zambia’s development journey.
