Police spokesperson Esther Mwaata Katongo has warned those burning public property saying the law will soon catch up with them.

Since UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema was charged with treason, several markets and buildings have been burnt in Lusaka, Kabwe and Choma by unknown people.

The Patriotic Front have linked this spate of fires to UPND supporters, saying it is their way of expressing displeasure over the incarceration of their leader HH.

The latest building to be burnt down was Sulu local court store room in Mongu, which is situated off Limulunga road and used to keep old records of court proceedings.

Katongo confirmed the incident in a statement today and warned those behind the fires.

“The fire was spotted in the early hours of today around 04:00 hours by people in the neighborhood who rushed to the scene and managed to put out the fire. Petrol was used in setting the fire. Investigations have been instituted. We would like to commend the people in the neighbourhood for being responsible citizens and for exhibiting patriotism. We reiterate our warning that all those who engage in such criminal acts should count their days because soon they will be nabbed and prosecuted,” stated Katongo.
