WE made an observation last week that in order to fix the numerous challenges that Zambia is struggling with, President Hakainde Hichilema and his party would have to face the reality of being hated. Our view has been that the UPND inherited a country that had been subjected to all manner of abuse. Unprecedented debt, a depleted treasury, nose-diving GDP, a worst performing local currency etc. This, coupled with unemployment, corruption, overpriced government contracts and a slowed economy due to the Covid-19 pandemic, meant that it was never going to be easy for the next government.
