Police in North Western Province have arrested a 43-year-old man for being in possession of K2,500,000 counterfeit notes.

North Western Province police Commissioner Auxensio Daka confirmed the development in a statement yesterday, saying Andrew Chama who is an employee at Kansanshi Mines in Solwezi was arrested as he attempted to exchange the fake notes with genuine currency.

he said a search at his house found more counterfeit notes which he was hiding.

And Daka disclosed that Chama was still appearing in the Kasempa Court for similar offences.

“On 21st November, 2017 Police received intelligence information that there were people who were about to transact K2,500,000 of counterfeit note in exchange with genuine note by conniving with an unnamed Banker of the Zambia National Commercial Bank, Solwezi Branch. Investigations were carried out and we managed to arrest a male by the name of Andrew Chama aged 43 years of messengers Compound and an employee at Kansanshi mine,” stated Daka.

“A search was promptly conducted at Andrew Chama’s House where we found 95 by 100 United States Dollars suspected counterfeit notes in a black suit case enclosed in an envelope. The same was recovered and currently in police custody as exhibits. The suspect has been arrested and charged for one count of being in possession of counterfeit notes contrary to section 364 chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia. The same suspect has Court cases in Kasempa for similar offences. The suspect will appear in Court soon.”
