TOBACCO Free Association of Zambia (TOFAZA) Executive Director Brenda Chitindi has urged government to increase taxes on tobacco, saying they are too low compared to other African countries. In an interview, Monday, Chitindi argued that taxes on tobacco ought to be high as it was one of the major risk factors for non communicable diseases. “There is a need for the government to increase tax on tobacco because if they increase tax, it would help like the cancer hospitals where tobacco related diseases are increasing each day, such as the Heart hospital and these high referral centres, especially centres such as the UTH, Levy and Ndola Teaching Hospital where the funding is very limited.
