Lusaka High Court judge Susan Wanjelani has sentenced a 21-year-old Lusaka woman to five years simple imprisonment for killing her boyfriend.
On Monday, Meya Namfukwe pleaded not guilty to a murder charge but when the case came up yesterday, the state reduced the charge to manslaughter, which she admitted.
Namfukwe stabbed Zambian musician Francis Zimba who was popularly known as Frankis in the leg in November 2016 after a dispute.
Before the fateful incident, the duo had a fight on their way home from a drinking spree.
Upon getting home, the two continued fighting after which the convict got a knife and run after Frankis.
Unfortunately Meya ended up stabbing Frankis when she slipped and fell to the ground.
Postmortem results revealed that the deceased died out of hemorrhage shock and anemia.
In her mitigation Meya asked the court to impose a lesser punishment on her because she was remorseful for ending Zimba’s life and that she had changed owing to the counselling she had been subjected to since she was incacerated.
In her sentencing, judge Wanjelani stated that it was sad that a life was cut short in such acts which could have been avoided.
Namfukwe wept and her mother followed suit after the sentence was handed down.
