THE National Assembly’s adoption of a motion to facilitate the monetisation of social media marks a significant milestone for Zambia’s digital economy. For too long, social media companies have reaped immense profits from Zambians who interact with their platforms daily, creating and consuming content without receiving any financial benefit. This imbalance has persisted despite the central role of local content creators in driving traffic and engagement on these platforms. It is time to right this wrong by implementing policies that ensure Zambian content creators are rewarded for their creativity and contributions. Social media platforms are nothing without content.
