Murder convict Chilanga UPND member of parliament Keith Mukata who was sentenced to death by the Lusaka High Court has filed in a notice of appeal against his conviction.

This is according to a notice of appeal filed in the Court of Appeal Holden at Lusaka Criminal Jurisdiction.

Mukata appealed on grounds the learned trial judge erred in law and fact when she convicted him without supporting evidence on record to support such a conviction.

“The learned trial judge erred in Law and fact when she convicted me based on circumstantial evidence which had more than one inference to be drawn there from. Other grounds to be included upon perusal and review of the entire judgments,” the notice read in part.

Judge Susan Wanjelani sentenced Mukata to death by hanging for the murder of his security guard, Wednesday but acquitted his co-accused and lover Charmaine Musonda on all counts.

In her judgment, Justice Wanjelani said she was convinced beyond reasonable doubt that Mukata’s guard died from gun shots which were discharged by him.

The court said Mukata’s testimony that more cartridges were found outside the gate was false and based on hearsay evidence.
