Former UPND vice-president Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba (GBM) has insisted that the only reason he re-joined the Patriotic Front is because he believes President Edgar Lungu is a far much better leader than Hakainde Hichilema.
Since he defected from the opposition two months ago, NDC president Chishimba Kambwili has been taunting Mwamba, saying his return to the ruling party had nothing to do with his support for President Lungu but his desire to serve his stomach.
Reacting to Kambwili’s assertions, Mwamba boasted that he had always been a successful businessman with “healthy” bank accounts all over the world, and that he had never gone under.
“First things first, I have been a very successful businessman when honourable Kambwili had nothing. That I think even the Zambian people can stand by me and testify. I am a very successful businessman, I have never gone under and I will never go under because I’ve always been on top of things. I joined PF and supported PF up to the time that we formed government and I spent money in order for PF to form government, that clearly shows that I am a stable and successful businessman. So, today, for my young boy, honourable Kambwili, to say that I have gone back to PF in order for my businesses to be resuscitated, I would say he is hallucinating! I have never in all my life gone under. Maybe him (Kambwili), if he has any business challenges, he should just tell the world that he has problems. But I don’t have problems, he can go anywhere, including South Africa where I am running businesses, they are all successful businesses and I maintain healthy [bank] accounts worldwide,” Mwamba said.
He said Hichilema would divide the country if given an opportunity to lead.
“Why I have gone back to PF is because I feel that the leadership of Edgar Chagwa Lungu is far much better than the leadership of Hakainde Hichilema. After weighing the two leaders, I worked with President Edgar Lungu and I have worked for the last four years with Hakainde Hichilema, and I have discovered that Hakainde Hichilema is not the best person to work with. He has his own political agenda and should he rise to the position of President, he will divide this country! Hence, I feel that the best person to support is President Edgar Lungu. I have said this time and again from the time that I re-joined PF… that this was not my wish, it was the wish of my supporters that I re-join PF and I believe in what my supporters want. They convinced me that I should be able to go back to the party that I helped form government, which is PF. Indeed, I have done it and my brothers and sisters in PF have welcomed me wholeheartedly and I feel at home,” Mwamba said.
He reiterated that he would now concentrate his energies on mobilising the PF ahead of the 2021 general election.
“I feel free that, now, I can participate freely in party activities and they have given me a leeway and that is why you have seen that day in, day out, I am out to mobilise the party. And I want to promise the leadership of PF that I will do my level best to help grow the party before the election [in 2021], of course, with the support of the President and the entire PF leadership,” said Mwamba.
