GOVERNMENT says it has made progress towards the expansion and refurbishment of the National Assembly Chamber to accommodate the increased number of MPs. Ministry of Infrastructure, Housing and Urban Development Permanent Secretary Professor Albert Malama says the expansion works, which are being undertaken at a cost of K39 million, are expected to be completed by August 27. Following the enactment of Constitution Amendment Bill No. 7 into law last year, the number of parliamentary seats increased from 156 to 226 following the creation of 70 new constituencies across all 10 provinces. The new law also introduced 40 Proportional Representation (PR) parliamentary seats.
