Ten-man Zambia has beaten Algeria 3 goals to 1 in the 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifier played at Lusaka’s Heroes Stadium.
Two goals from Brian Mwila in the first half and a winner from Enock Mwepu in the nick of time saw the Chipolopolo boys bagging three points at home.
Mwila scored the opening goal in the 6th minute via a header from an Augustine Mulenga right wing cross.
The striker came back in the 33rd to record a debut senior national team brace.
After half time however, table turned as visiting Algeria’s Yacine Brahimi pulled one back from a swift outside the box strike that found Chipolopolo goalie Kennedy Mweene wanting.
The visitors dominated possession and kept nocking with several attempts going wider at the post.
Trouble for the Copper bullets was spelt after the highly reputed forward Fashion Sakala picked his second yellow from two fouls and a subsequent red card in the 55th minute, leaving Zambia one-man down.
But it was the Under 20 striker Mwepu who sealed victory for the desperate Chipolopolo when he cracked a winner from far wide into the bottom left of the Algerian mouth.
Chipolopolo are now four points and second placed in group B behind unbeaten Nigeria who are almost home and dry with 9 points from three games.
Cameroon and Algeria now share the bottom slot with a point apiece after three matches.
