Lusaka Province Police Commissioner Nelson Phiri has confirmed the death of a 3rd year law student at the University of Lusaka (UNILUS) who died in a road accident.
Phiri told News Diggers! in an interview that the accident happened on Saturday June 23, 2018, along Thabo Mbeki road near the luxurious Falls Way apartment complex.
He said the accident occurred when the 32 year-old driver of the vehicle, who is the deceased’s male friend, failed to negotiate a curve due to excessive speed and overturned in the process.
Phiri identified the deceased as Mwinji Lukundo Soko, aged 21 years, while the driver has been identified as Lupiya Simusokwe, aged 32 years, who is nursing wounds at Pearl of Health Hospital in Lusaka.
“Yes, we have that report. The accident involved Lupiya Simusokwe, aged 32, of flat number 03, Kelly Mansansa Close in Rhodespark. This one is the one who is injured and is admitted to Pear of Heath Hospital. That is a friend who picked her. And the woman is Mwinji Lukundo Soko, aged 21, who was a student at the same university. So, you were spot-on! She is of plot number 12426 Woodlands. This occurred on the 23rd June at around 03:30 hours along Thabo Mbeki Road near Falls Way Apartment. The driver failed to control the motor vehicle, I am sure because of some [excessive] speed,” Phiri said.
On Monday, UNILUS management on its official Facebook sent its message of condolences to the friends and family of Soko.
“We would like to pass our heartfelt condolences to the friends and family of Mwinji Soko who was a 3rd year Law student at UNILUS,” Management wrote.

Words cannot express how saddened we are that tragedy should cut your young and vibrant life so short, but we’ll be eternally grateful that you shared it with us.”
