REFLECTING on Zambia’s journey from colonial rule to independence, on this Heroes Day, it is impossible to ignore the stark contrast between our incorruptible founding fathers and the contemporary politicians who have ruled our country over the past three decades. The selfless dedication of our pre-independence freedom fighters sharply contrasts with the greed, self-interest, and tribalism that characterise much of today’s political landscape. It is hard to find a reflection of Dr Kenneth Kaunda, Simon Mwansa Kapwepwe, Mainza Chona, Harry Mwaanga Nkhumbula and others, in the leadership that is at our disposal today.
