UKA Chairperson Sakwiba Sikota, State Counsel, has appealed to the Judiciary that it should avoid incarcerating parliamentarians when they have committed offences that could be punished with a fine. Sikota has expressed concern that jailing MPs triggers by-elections, which put a high cost on the rest of society. This is a very good appeal to the Judiciary. Our prisons are filled with people who could have easily suffered financial punishment for the misdemeanors they committed. Prisons should be reserved for people whose crimes should not allow them to be mingling with vulnerable members of the public.
