Twelve people have died in Lusaka, Southern, Eastern and Western Provinces, in separate accidents which occurred on Sunday.

Meanwhile, 14 UCZ choir members of St Mark’s congregation survived a road traffic accident along Lilayi Road on their way from a choir competition.

In a statement issued, Monday, Zambia Police public relations officer Esther Mwaata Katongo disclosed that on Sunday, 12 people died in separate accidents in Lusaka, Southern, Eastern and Western provinces.

She stated that in Lusaka, nine people had died while seven others sustained serious injuries in an accident which occurred on Great East Road, Chongwe District.

“Twelve people died in separate accidents, which happened yesterday, 12th August, 2018, in Lusaka, Southern, Eastern and Western provinces. In Lusaka, nine people died while seven others sustained serious injuries in an accident, which occurred at about 15:30 hours at Mpango area on Great East road in Chongwe District. Four passengers died on the spot while five others among them, the driver of the Toyota Hiace, died at Chongwe Hospital where they were rushed for medical attention,” Katongo stated.

She disclosed that the accident happened when the driver of the bus was overtaking improperly and collided head-on with the oncoming Volvo truck.

Katongo stated that the injured were in Chongwe and Levy Mwanawasa Hospitals whereas the bodies of the deceased were in Chongwe Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem.

“Involved was a Toyota Hiace Registration number BAH 4875, which was being driven by William Sichimanga Chunga and a Volvo truck registration number ALF 2214, which was being driven by Crywell Banda aged 34 of Eastern Province. The accident happened when the driver of the bus was overtaking improperly hence collided head-on with the oncoming Volvo truck. The injured are in Chongwe and Levy Mwanawasa Hospitals while the bodies of the deceased are in Chongwe Hospital mortuary awaiting post-mortem,” Katongo added.

And she stated that in Eastern Province, a 13 year old juvenile died on spot while eight others sustained injuries in an accident, which happened in Kasusu area.

“In Eastern Province, a male juvenile identified as Davy Ngulube aged 13, a passenger on a tractor, died on the spot while eight others sustained injuries in an accident, which happened at Kasusu area, 32 kilometres east of Nyimba Boma on Great East Road. The accident happened when the driver of a Toyota Hilux registration number APB 3804, Sikombe Mukuka aged 58 of Bauleni Compound in Lusaka with four passengers on board tried to overtake a tractor registration number BAA 7913 driven by Francis Lungu aged 42 of Kapotwe village of Nyimba District, but failed as there was an oncoming truck and in the process hit into the tractor. The injured that include both drivers were rushed to Nyimba District Hospital for medical attention while the body of the deceased is in the same Hospital mortuary,” Katongo stated.

“In Southern Province, a pillion died on the spot in an accident which happened at about 17:00 hours nine kilometres north of Batoka on Great North road. The accident happened when the driver of the motor vehicle Scania Truck registration number CH 06 PW GP driven from south to north by Franco Simoonga aged 50 of Dambwa Compound in Livingstone misjudged clearance distance and in the process hit into an unregistered motor cycle, which was being ridden by Luckson Hampuma aged 44 carrying a pillion Boyd Mulako Lishomwa aged 35 of Kazi Compound who died on the spot while the rider sustained minor injuries. The body of the deceased is in Choma General Hospital mortuary,” Katongo stated.

She further stated that in North Western Province, an unknown pedestrian died on the spot while six others sustained serious injuries after they were involved in an accident, which happened around 18:30 hours at Kiawama roundabout, Solwezi.

Meanwhile, 14 UCZ choir members of St Mark’s congregation were on Sunday involved in a road traffic accident along Lilayi Road on their way from a choir competition.

UTH Public Relations Officer Natalie Mashikolo who confirmed the development in a statement, adding that the victims were last evening attended at the hospital.

“On Sunday 12th August, 2018 around 21:00 hours University Teaching Hospitals attended to 14 choir members from United Church of Zambia St Mark’s congregation in Chilenje who were involved in an accident, which happened along Lilayi Road near Choppies as they were coming from a choir competition.. The minibus they were travelling in lost control as it tried to avoid a stationery car that was parked in the middle of the road. Of the 14, only one is admitted Mervis Zulu aged 43 who suffered a mild head injury. The rest of the accident victims were treated and later sent home,” stated Mashikolo.
