THE Lusaka High Court has sentenced Bushimbwa Mwakacheya of Salama Park to seven years’ imprisonment with hard labour for causing the deaths of his parents in August 2022. Mwakacheya was initially charged with two counts of murder, but High Court Judge Gertrude Chawatama substituted the charges with manslaughter after uncontested medical evidence showed that he was likely experiencing a drug-induced psychotic episode at the time of the offences. In this matter, it was alleged that on August 6, 2022, Mwakacheya, who was 19 at the time, killed his mother, Alphonstah Mwakacheya, and his father, Nathaniel Mwakacheya.
