YOU may be powerful today but remember, time is more powerful than you, says former chief government spokesperson Chishimba Kambwili. In a Facebook posting today, the outspoken Kambwili, who was fired from his position of information minister by President Edgar Lungu last year, warned those who were abusing power. “When a bird is alive it eats ants, but when a bird dies ants eat it. Time & circumstance can change at any period…try as much as you can never to devalue or hurt anyone in life. You may be powerful today… but remember, time is more powerful than you,” Kambwili stated. “One tree makes a million match-sticks but when the time comes, only one match-stick is needed to burn a million trees.”
Kambwili’s followers however found the posting ironic, considering his brutality while he served as minister and did not hesitate to remind him of the past.On February 12, 2015, just after being sworn in as information minister, Kambwili launched an attack against a critical online publication, Zambian Watchdog, saying he would not fail to close it down the way others before him had failed. “We will close them down even if it means involving the CIA we will do it, I know that previous ministers have failed to close the Zambian Watchdog but I have never started a crusade and failed. We will close them down even if it means involving the CIA we will do it,” he told journalists shortly after being sworn in.
“You can run but you can’t hide we will not hesitate to close them down. We will also not tolerate media houses that promote tribalism and hate speech. I will not hesitate to close them down.”And a few days before his dismissal, Kamwbili urged the police to immediately stop the operations of The Mast and ensure that those behind it face the wrath of the law but it was the paper he called and gave an exclusive interview after being fired.
