The famous John Chinena roadside market has been gutted by fire with about 30 stands destroyed.

Confirming the development, Chibombo Town Council Chairperson, James Ntalasha said the fire started around 17:00 hours, Monday.

Ntalasha said quick action by the fire Brigade prevented further damage to property.

“Yes, I can confirm that an inferno has swept through the make shift stands at John Chinena market and about 30 stands have been destroyed. Thankfully no life has been lost. The fire brigade that rushed to the scene managed to quench the fire, “Ntalasha said.

The Chibombo Town Council Chairperson said the source of the fire was unclear.

“We are not yet sure what could have caused the fire. However, we suspect that a passerby may have dropped a piece of cigarette that was still burning close to the stands and this may have sparked the fire. I sympathize with the traders for this loss. I urge them to be wary of people that stop over to buy their merchandise with anything that may lead to fires. I also urge our people to adhere to fire safety regulations,” said Ntalasha.
