THE 2023 Prisons Audit report has revealed that there are low levels of respect for inmates’ human rights in most prisons across the country. According to the report, 57.4% of inmates complained of inhumane treatment at various correctional facilities. The report revealed that an example of such inhumane treatment inflicted on inmates was the use of the same bucket to bathe, put food in and scoop faecal matter from toilets or sewer systems. “During the survey, the inmates were asked whether their rights were respected and if they enjoyed them while in detention.
