LUSAKA Lawyer Jonas Zimba says the Electoral Commission of Zambia’s argument that they followed the Constitutional Court’s ruling when they set a date for the Kawambwa parliamentary by-elections is flawed. In July this year, the Kawambwa Magistrates’ Court convicted and sentenced former Kawambwa PF MP Nickson Chilangwa to 60 months imprisonment for malicious damage to property. Last week, ECZ set December 20, 2024, for the National Assembly by-election in Kawambwa constituency but Lunte PF member of parliament Mutotwe Kafwaya rose on a matter of public importance in the National Assembly, saying the electoral body would cause conflict if it proceeded with the by-elections because there was a stay on elections in Kawambwa constituency following Chilangwa’s appeal against his conviction.
