A CHIPATA businessman has been arrested for illegally operating a pharmacy and being in possession of suspected stolen government medicines.

In a statement, Sunday, Zambia Medicines Regulatory Authority (ZAMRA) senior public relations officer Christabel Iliamupu stated that George Banda, 34, also a teacher, was nabbed following routine inspections by ZAMRA officers at Dyakanani Market located in Muchini Compound of Chipata, Eastern Province.

“A Chipata businessman has been arrested for operating a pharmacy without a Certificate of Registration, contrary to section 14 (1) of the Medicines and Allied Substances Act No. 3 of 2013. This is in addition to being in possession of government medicines suspected to have been stolen or unlawfully obtained, contrary to Section 319 of the Penal Code Chapter 87 of the laws of Zambia. George Banda, male, aged 34 years, who is a teacher by profession, has been arrested and detained at Chipata Central Police, pending processing of court documents required for prosecution,” stated Illiamupu.

“The incident happened following a routine inspection undertaken by ZAMRA inspectors, in collaboration with the Drug Enforcement Commission (DEC), in Dyakanani Market located in Muchini Compound of Chipata, Eastern Province.”

She further warned all those engaging in such vices to refrain or risk being prosecuted.
