Zambia Railways Limited chief executive officer Christopher Musonda says it is sad that a truck hit into a cargo train in Kafue this morning, causing one of the wagons to close the road.
At a media briefing at Shitima House headquarters in Kabwe today, Musonda said the accident was very unfortunate.
He explained that the truck, registration number BAE 9150 which was laden with maize, hit into locomotive 268 of train 470 at Shikoswe level crossing in Kafue-Lilayi section causing the third wagon to block the road.
“We are saddened by this accident. The truck and trailer is actually the one that hit into our cargo train causing the third wagon to close the road,” Musonda said.
He said the company was however relieved that no deaths were recorded.
“We are relieved that no fatalities have been reported in the accident. Our line will also be able to service other trains,” he said.
The ZRL CEO warned motorists to desist from ignoring traffic rules especially at rail crossings.
He said the company was concerned about the increasing number of motorists who were in a hurry to beat oncoming trains.
“We have observed with dismay and concern the increasing number of motorists who are in a hurry to beat oncoming trains and totally ignoring signals. We would like to remind every motorist in the country that the train has the right of way and follows a strict line that it cannot swerve from,” said Musonda.
