KATETE District Commissioner Michael Matebele has died while two others have sustained serious injuries in an accident that occurred along Great East Road at Chongwe weigh Bridge.

In a statement, Wednesday, Police Spokesperson Rae Hamoonga said the accident happened when the driver of the Toyota Mark two, Matebele, failed to keep to his near side hence collided head-on with an oncoming truck.

“One person died on the spot while two of his passengers sustained serious injuries when the motor vehicle they were travelling on, a Toyota Mark two registration number ALK 5626 collided head-on with a Volvo truck registration number AJE 3869/ ALZ 9727T along Great East road at Chongwe weigh bridge. The deceased has been identified as Michael Matebele aged 43, the District Commissioner for Katete who was driving the Toyota Mark two. The accident happened when the driver of the Toyota Mark two failed to keep to his near side hence collided head-on with the oncoming truck,” stated Hamoonga.

“The two [passengers] sustained serious injuries namely; Sebastian Musakama aged 36 and Denis Zimba age not known. The body of the deceased has been deposited in Chongwe District Hospital Mortuary awaiting postmortem while the injured are admitted at the same hospital. The driver of the truck escaped unhurt.”
