THE Judicial Service Commission is inviting applications from suitably qualified candidates to fill 20 positions as Judges in the High Court and Court of Appeal. The Commission says applicants must have at least 10 years of active legal practice, possess high moral character, integrity and impartiality, and must demonstrate a high degree of professional competence, good temperament, among other requirements. Meanwhile, Lawyer Dickson Jere says the Commission should go beyond mere public advertisement to include public hearings. He notes that South Africa and the US have a system where candidates are subjected to a public hearing to answer questions about their qualifications and competence.
