Police in Chingola have arrested a Chinese national in connection with the attempted theft of copper concentrates valued at US$100,000.
Copperbelt Police Commissioner Charity Katanga disclosed that the attempted theft of goods in transit happened on March 5, between 13:00hrs and 22:00hrs along Chingola-Kitwe Road.
Katanga said a Volvo truck Registration number ACX 2439 and trailer ACM 2321 with a total weight of 36 tonnes was carrying copper concentrate from Kisenda town in the Democratic Republic of Congo to Ndola when the truck driver working together with his unknown friends attempted to steal the contraband.
She said the truck being driven by David Daka 34, of unknown fixed abode was being escorted by a Panorama Security Guard Laston Makungu 27, of B 144 Mine area Chililabombwe.
“Daka deviated the truck from Kalulushi road near Sabina in Kitwe to Chingola light industrial area near Status Hitech off Chingola-Chililabombwe road. Zhang Lianan 42, of Chingola light industrial area a Chinese national is detained at Chingola Central police to help the police with investigation,” Katanga said.
She said Daka and his helper are on the run and police have instituted a manhunt for the duo.
“The truck is safely parked at Chingola Central police station,” said Katanga.
